C is for cookie…

Yes, it’s started — it’s GIRL SCOUT COOKIE time. Last year, I ordered a box or two but never got them. This year, I’m BOMBARDED by Girl Scouts that I currently teach or have taught before or will teach in the future asking if I’d like to buy cookies.

I did buy two boxes at the beginning of this week and have been very good about not finishing them in one or two sittings. In fact, I’ve shared out of both and still have over 1/2 each box left. All in moderation!

So, my two favorite cookies are:
Caramel deLites

and

YUMMMMMMMY!!!

Even a 12 step program is not enough for me!

  • We start with jazz band rehearsal on Monday, Jan. 23. They start at 7 am. Why do I do this to myself? I guess ’cause I enjoy it. Not the “torture” of the hours but the activity. I’m addicted to band.

Hello, my name is Cathy Benford. I’m a band addict.

Today is my dad’s 76th birthday. Unfortunately, because of everyone’s crazy schedules, (Trish has it rough since Steve Jobs introduced the Intel based Apples this last week) I have no idea when we’re going to go celebrate. My mom’s birthday is coming up in a few weeks and I think I might be having to go out of town that weekend so maybe we can just have one big celebration for the both of them….

I spent this morning making a lasagna I can eat off of all week. It’s the only way I can eat healthy and not spend what little money I have left over from the last paycheck I got almost a month & a half ago.

Can you believe they ask us to go a month and a half without pay between the December paycheck and the January one? Sucks. Every year, I say I’m going to put money aside to help me survive that time period. Every year, I never get around to it. I’ve gotta figure out some plan to accomplish that this year. Hell, if I’m going to buy a house in May, every penny is going to count for a long time. Luckily, I’ll have my car paid off this summer so that’s a little more money I’ll have to put towards a house payment.

Okay, back to my lasagna…. The sauce is almost done. This little ninja sure can make some sauce!

    Victory for the 512!!!

I’m not known as a Longhorn fan…in fact, I’ve claimed to be an anti-fan for years. It’s amazing that having a few ex-students in Longhorn Band (LHB) has changed my alliances. When I watched the Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, I heard the LHB about 5 floats before I saw them on TV and I couldn’t help but stand up and hold up my Horns. I have horns to hold up??? I guess so.

Tonight, I went to Connie, Sami & Frank’s house to watch the game. I came home early ’cause I was getting sleepy – it was WAY passed my bedtime around halftime – and listened all the way home. It was quite the wild ride listening to that end of the game!!!

Once the game was over, I hadn’t even killed the engine (I actually had to pull over to just listen, the game was THAT intense at the end) and I headed over to Academy ’cause I heard they were going to sell Champions stuff if when the Longhorns won the game. I ran into Kristina, Elyse and Risa there and we got in early. I got my shirt! Once we left, the line went around the corner and I don’t know where the end was!!! Even with the long standing anti-fan-ness (is that a word?), I’ll wear it proud, throwing out the props to the 512 area code!

OH, and as I left, I called my Andrew & Daniel and Andrew let me listen to the band play “Eyes” for a bit. I don’t know if he realized he did that but it was wonderful. Hook ’em!!

    Happy New Years Eve Eve!

Well, I’m “being domestic” today. Or trying to be. I’m not doing too good of a job, huh Daniel? I just can’t seem to get moving but so many distractions keep coming my way. My mom always told me that you should start the New Year with a clean house. I’m trying to get that way. Luckily I have a little of tomorrow to finish up what I don’t get done today.

I’d like to also welcome my friend Daniel Montoya to our official readership. He’s been talking about “how do you comment on your site?” for a little while and I’ve finally gotten him to come out of his lurking state. Maybe now, he’ll grace my site with his comments…. Ah, as long as he introduces me to Eric Whitacre like he says he will, I don’t care if he never comments! Just kidding, Danny – you need to comment now. I’ve put you on the spot. See how I am? 😀

I’ve watched a few movies lately so I need to write some reviews. I’ll do that once I get this place clean – or once I start looking for another distraction.

I am going to go out on the town with Cathy and her co-workers from Unisys. I think it’ll be a lot of fun. 🙂 What’s in your itinerary?

I guess I’ll finish up with my next to last Calvin & Hobbs cartoon. I have one more for tomorrow! That worked out well, didn’t it? I didn’t even plan it! 😀 Hope you’ve enjoyed them.

    Happy New Years Eve Eve!!!

Post Christmas, Pre New Years Update

With this being the holidays, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated. Even if you don’t read the update itself, stay tuned. There will be another Calvin & Hobbs cartoon at the end; despite our 80 degree Austin weather!

Christmas was wonderful. I got down to my parents’ house and Trish was there so we were ready to go. We opened our gifts (we do very few gifts because of the tradition) and got packed in my car to head to The Four Seasons for the annual Christmas morning brunch (that’s the tradition). I guess almost 10 years ago, my parents decided that we were all too difficult to buy gifts for so they suggested that we do a lovely (my dad’s word) Christmas brunch at a hotel to keep my mom from having to cook and to keep us all from having to stress over figuring out what to get each other. For the most part, it’s been a lot of fun these past 10 years. This year, I was a little under the weather, though. My sinuses were on overload and it just wouldn’t stop. It was still a lot of fun, even though I didn’t eat nearly as much as I normally do. I did have some champagne and caviar and such so it was worth it.

After we ate, we wandered the grounds behind The Four Seasons by Lake Austin. It was a beautiful day and we had given mom a camera (so some gifts have come back into the tradition) so we had to take the opportunity to take pictures of, well, EVERYTHING! My sister & I both had our cameras as well so literally everything got photographed. Katie, photographer! My pictures can be seen by clicking on the picture of my dancing mom and my sister’s and mom’s pictures can be seen by clicking on what looks like my dad whistling. Actually, she had to put her pics in 3 albums so the 3 thumbprints after mom dancing would be her 3 albums. I think some pictures are a bit redundant but taking lots of pictures are always fun. Oh, I forgot to mention that we met some folks my mom knows (go figure) and they had 4 1/2 year old twins — Luke & Katie — and Katie wanted to take pictures. Trish lent Katie her camera and Katie went to work. Many of the pictures from Trish’s 2nd album were taken by Katie, 4 1/2 year old!

Monday morning, the sinus thing turned fever. 😦 I sat at home for two days and finally made a trip to HEB on Tuesday afternoon. It had felt like I’d been sitting in my apartment for so long, I thought it was Wednesday. I was so pissed that I had wasted 3 days of my holidays being sick until I realized it was only Tuesday. Ah, relief. I did re-watch Oceans Twelve yesterday. I need to re-review it soon.

So, today, I’m much better. I’m gonna head to the mall and exchange one thing (wrong size) and maybe check out a sale or two. I think mom & I are going to head to IKEA on Monday, although going to Houston is NOT on any priority list. Maybe I’ll go down HWY 71 so it’s not the same stupid memories for me to have to suffer through. Eh, enough of that.

I’m not 100% sure what my plans for New Years Eve are yet. I’ve got a few choices, all of them are just easy going gatherings. Unfortunately, they aren’t very close to each other so “party hopping” probably isn’t going to happen. What are your plans?
