A little poetry

I’m not much of a poet. In fact, I don’t GET most poetry. My boyfriend doesn’t understand how I can’t like or even get most poems but he doesn’t like jazz so I guess that balances us to some degree.

Several years ago, we were either at a dress rehearsal or performance of our school’s production of South Pacific and the phrase “open the Blue Shades” wouldn’t leave my brain. After pondering it a bit, I realized that Blue Shades is a title of a wind band piece composed by Frank Ticheli. The next day, I went online and looked up his other titles and realized a nice poem could come by combining the titles of the works he’d written up to that point. It doesn’t contain all his titles up to that point but most of them and I’m not sure that I actually ever finished it. I hope you enjoy my little poem. There’s no title to the poem itself since it contains so many in it. 😉

I have Gaian Visions
of the Proud Vesuvius
as it takes is Wild Nights
lit by Nitro.

Don’t live locked in your Fortress
like your Portrait of a Clown.
Open the Blue Shades
and let the Sundance.

When you are off
in your Sanctuary,
send me a Simple Gift.
Even if it’s just a Postcard.

From the Shenandoah
to the Pacific,
I sing a Fanfare,
my Second Symphony
as the Amazing Grace
of The American Elegy.

So, that’s it – my first “published” poem. Yes, some of it is a little forced but again, I’m not a student of poetry by any means. I hope you enjoyed it!

Stars & Stripes, Muppet Style

I’m kinda glad the piccolo soli isn’t there done by Beaker. Thanks to Chester Phillips for sharing this video!

Today’s inspirational song lyrics

Isn’t this the truth? 🙂

When You’re Smiling
by Larry Shay, Joe Goodwin & Mark Fischer

When you’re smiling
When you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you’re laughing
When you’re laughing
The sun comes shining through

But when you’re crying
You bring on the rain
So stop your sighing
Be happy again

Keep on smiling
Cause when you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you’re smiling
When you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you

When you’re laughing
When you’re laughing
That sun comes shining through

But when you’re crying
You bring on the rain
So stop your sighing
Be happy again

Keep on smiling
Cause when you’re smiling
The whole world smiles with you

I Done Done It

Mandy Lauderdale Grass & Top HatMy friend Mandy Lauderdale has a new CD out and it’s a lot of fun! She’s a lounge singer and she really covers that “genre” well. The first time I listened to “I Done Done It” (the name of her CD), I had it on in the background as I was tooling around the house and several times, it caught me by surprise in that she doesn’t stick to just one style of singing. Her songs range from swing & shuffle jazz to country to rock-a-billy-ish to even beach (a la Jimmy Buffet). She has a show tonight (3/19) at The Belmont but thanks to the advent of technology and the marketing of SXSW, anyone can see this seductress on “The Internet”! Either way, it’s a free show. 🙂 Show starts at 10pm Central time – check it out. Here are the links to seeing her show online:

Via her website – look below “the curtains”
Via MySpace
To purchase her CD.

If you miss either showing, you’ll be able to see her sing with my jazz ensemble in May…I just have to work out the details (including what song she’s gonna sing) first.

A Few Reviews

I’ve seen quite a few movies in the last few months. Here are a few reviews:

I Am Legend
I watched this on an HBO channel so no commercials and I really enjoyed this movie. I do have to admit that the whole “zombie” thing kinda creeped me out and there were a few sad scenes but for a movie with so few characters, it really kept me intrigued. I do have to say that after watching this movie tonight, every noise I hear outside after it’s gotten dark are making me jump just a bit. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Taken
Oh WOW!! What a thrilling movie. I’m not going to give away anymore of the plot than what you see in commercials…Liam Neeson plays a retired government spy whose daughter goes to Paris for a sightseeing trip with friends and gets abducted while on the phone with him. As any ex-spy father would do, he goes into action to rescue his little girl. It wasn’t a scary movie, per say, but very intense. You don’t even realize how long it takes to establish the story or characters. Very well made. I plan on buying it when it goes to DVD. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Gran Torino
First thing, I had no idea that a Gran Torino was a car. I’m such a girl! LOL. Clint Eastwood is still an awesome actor. I can’t believe he’s 79 years old!! This movie is also an intense movie but in a very different way. His character’s a Korean War veteran that is quite prejudice. He watches his neighborhood change culturally with Hmong families and their respective gangs moving in. Despite his historical prejudices, he befriends his neighbors and helps Thao (the very quiet boy) come into his own and not walk down the wrong path, as his cousins have. Eastwood’s character (Walt Kowalski) is a stereo typical crotchety old man that you can’t help but find endearing as you get to know him better through the movie. The movie is paced well and the character development is integrated well into the story so you’re never really bored. We enjoyed the movie quite a bit and I plan on adding it to my movie collection when it becomes available. 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Britney Spears – Circus
I have only had one listen to the full CD so I’m not IN LOVE with it but it’s pretty good. There isn’t a track on the CD that I’ve skipped so that says a lot. If you’re one to try the new Britney, take a good listen to Track 6 – If U Seek Amy. She does a very good job enunciating every consonant sound in the title phrase and it sounds…well…provocative, to say the least. The jury is still out so I’ll rate it 3 out of 5 stars.

So, those are my reviews. Have a great next week. 🙂
Love you, mean it!

Beatles homage

I’m not one for remakes of Beatles or Eagles songs. Why mess with what is already great? I’ve even gone so far as to call the idea blasphamous BUT, my friend Naomi sent me this link and it’s so much of an homage, than a remake that I had to share it. I wonder how old this kid is???

Thank You Girl

Each week, on Tuesdays, iTunes likes to promote new artists or albums by offering a free song of the week. Most times, it’s not very good but last week, their song was by Karina (Pasian, not to be confused with the South American singer Karina) called “Just Can’t Find the Words”. It’s not really the lyrics that catch me but the upbeat tempo and the fun melody of the tune. Good for both a work out and to just kick back to. Unfortunately, it’s not free on iTunes anymore but still available for just 99 cents.

woo woo
woo woo
woo woo
woo woo

Now we’ve been talking for a while;
And you got me tryin to figure out
boy i don’t know what to say to you
but you got me feelin some kind of way for you

and all i know is when we’re together
no one can make me feel the way you do baby
i wish each moment can last forever
its hard to explain the way i feel for you
(i just can’t find the words)
you got me loosing myself
in what i’m trying to say
and its so hard to fight it
cant help but feelin this way
and every time that i’m near you its like my heart gets weak.
feels like im loosing my breath makin it hard to speak.

i just can’t find the words
woo woo
just can’t find the words
woo woo
i just cant find the words
woo woo
i just can’t find the words

————————UPDATE————————
I know what it is that I like about this song – it’s simplicity. Every chord is laid out in it’s arpeggios and it just makes the song sound so simple and, and…quaint!
